Summary
General Summary:
The Surgeon is responsible for performing surgical procedures to prevent or correct injuries and diseases of pediatric patients. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Demonstrates excellence in practice characterized by quality patient care and participation in formal and informal patient, family/guardian and staff education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviews patient medical history and medical records to determine the best procedure for treatment. li>Performs surgical procedures to prevent or correct injuries, diseases, deformities, disorders, and/or patient function following all regulatory and ethical protocols.
- Follows established surgical techniques during surgery.
- Communicates information to patients, parents /guardians regarding diagnosis, treatment goals, and risk factors involved.
- Educates patients on wellness, prevention, early detection, and health maintenance by providing information and resources to patients and families.
- Coordinates follow up meetings and monitors health condition after surgery or treatment.
- Examines all instruments and equipment in OR to ensure sterility.
- Facilitates referrals to other healthcare professionals and medical facilities.
- Consults with Chief of Surgery and other healthcare professionals regarding patient care and assessment.
- Directs and coordinates activities of hospital staff for proper patient care.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal regulations and guidelines.
- Engages in using performance data to identify opportunities for improvement, risk management initiatives, and overall enhancement of patient experiences and outcomes. < i>Serves as a resource to clinical and non-clinical staff regarding specific skill demonstration, promotion of knowledge and communication.
- Maintains current knowledge in field, compliance with licensure and certification requirements, ensuring safe working practices in a safe working environment.
- li>Degree in Medicine from an accredited medical school required.
- Completion of residency training in surgical specialty area.
- Board certified or Board eligible in surgical specialty area.
- Current state medical license.
- Current DEA license.
- Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.
- Must have excellent organization and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and coordinate staff functions while working in a high pressure environment.

Nansemond Pediatrics currently have three physicians and one nurse practitioner. Our administrative and clinical team consist of 11 staff on site and four off-site centralized services for triage calls, patient outreach coordinators, billing, and coding. The practice has 18 exam rooms and two triage rooms and an average annual patient volume of 13,000 visits.
The Pediatric Primary Care Physician will be responsible for conducting routine health examinations, preventive visits, and chronic and acute illness management. The Pediatric Primary Care Physician is accountable for delivering comprehensive quality patient care according to standards of practice. The Physician functions as a member of an inter-disciplinary team within an integrated academic model.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides primary medical care for a dedicated panel of patients, including diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness according to evidence-based standards. li>Obtains clinical histories, conducts appropriate physical examinations and assessments, orders diagnostic testing and formulates treatment plans.
- Conducts routine health examinations, screenings and evaluations and makes recommendations for preventive health measures and screening tests as appropriate.
- Delivers age-appropriate anticipatory guidance. li>Orders and is responsible for the dispensing and administration of certain medications and immunizations on-site.
- Documents appropriate clinical information in the electronic health record in a timely manner and completing billing per CMG policy.
- Reviews documents including outside records and consultant reports and summarizes information in the medical record.
- Determines need for additional services including but not limited to nursing, care coordination, social services, health education, and referral for specialty care.
- Participates in regular multidisciplinary clinical team meetings and assists in the coordination of care in a team-based setting.
- Refers patients to hospitals for emergency care and admission when needed and communicates with hospital staff as appropriate.
- Uses and promotes evidence-based clinical practice.
- Reviews on a regular basis long term cases that require ongoing medical attention.
- Consults with Medical Director and other medical professionals as needed regarding patient care, assessment, and education issues.
- Participates in quality improvement, management, continuing education, and other patient care programs established by CMG.
- Participate in the identification and implementation of opportunities to enhance patient and family satisfaction.
- Academic appointments with EVMS is supported and encouraged

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) seeks a board certified or board eligible Child Abuse Pediatrician to join the medical team at our Child Advocacy Center (CAC), which has been a critical resource in Coastal Virginia for more than 27 years .
The CAC is a department of Virginia's sole free-standing children's hospital, which has the region’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. A 60-bed pediatric mental health hospital tower opened in 2022. CHKD has demonstrated sincere and ongoing commitment to the maintenance and success of the CAC and our medical team. Academic appointment will be in the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics of Eastern Virginia Medical School, newly affiliated with Old Dominion University’s Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences.
Accredited through the National Children's Alliance and dedicated to providing child-friendly services to children with suspected maltreatment, CHKD’s CAC is the largest in Virginia, serving over 2,700 children annually. The program offers medical, forensic, and mental health services to abused and neglected children at its three locations in southeastern Virginia. The medical team currently consists of a child abuse pediatrician, 2 physician assistants, nursing, and forensic nurse examiners. In addition to the medical team, the CAC also includes forensic interviewers, licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, case managers, and trainees. Our center has an established program for trafficked youth and houses the area’s trauma-informed community network. The program has been training child abuse pediatric fellows since 2003.

With CHKD Medical Group (CMG), you’ll join more than 120 CHKD board-certified pediatricians and nurse practitioners in 19 primary care practices with 27 locations throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Each CHKD medical group practice is recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a patient-centered medical home for our patients. And, as a member of CHKD Health System, CMG pediatricians work closely with our full range of pediatric specialist and surgeons. Responsibilities include:
- li >Provide high-quality, compassionate pediatric care in an outpatient clinic setting li >Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions in children li >Build strong connections with patients and families, fostering a supportive environment li >Participate in rotating on-call duties as needed li >Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including subspecialists, nursing staff, and on-call triage li >Ensure patient care is aligned with best practices and medical guidelines li >Engage in continuing medical education and professional development
Qualifications
- li >Board-eligible or board-certified in pediatrics (if board-eligible, certification must be obtained within 2 years of residency completion) li >Must possess a valid Virginia medical license li >Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on patient care li >Excellent rapport with children and families
