About the Program:

Access Point in the Mission District is part of the Adult Coordinated Entry System, partnering with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH). It aims to identify, assess, and match individuals experiencing housing instability to appropriate housing opportunities, minimizing homelessness through problem solving and housing navigation services.

It employs a housing first approach with standardized tools and assessment processes to meet clients' immediate and long-term housing needs.

Position Description:

The Problem Solving Specialist will provide support, assistance, and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness, working closely with licensed care coordinators and housing navigators. The role involves working primarily at the Mission-based Access Point and visiting other sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Screen and assess adults experiencing homelessness using standardized tools and protocols.
  • Support clients in avoiding shelter or street homelessness by identifying creative solutions outside traditional housing resources.
  • Analyze barriers to resolution and engage clients in problem-solving conversations.
  • Support clients in exploring solutions within their networks and provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Make referrals into housing programs and services using the ONE System.
  • Follow up to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide culturally relevant support and advocacy, working within an environment committed to harm reduction, recovery, and wellness.
  • Serve as a liaison to community and government partners and participate in team activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Other Organizational Duties:

  • Conduct business according to the Mission Action Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment.
  • Treat community members with respect and dignity.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in case management, counseling, or similar fields.
  • Experience working with homeless populations.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Skills in crisis intervention, boundary setting, conflict resolution, and de-escalation.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; knowledge of the ONE System is a plus.
  • Understanding of intersectionality and the needs of impacted communities, especially in San Francisco's Mission District.
  • Commitment to housing justice and multicultural programming.

Department Overview (Department website)

The Department of Philosophy offers students the following opportunities for a rich and rewarding undergraduate experience: a general Philosophy Major, a Pre-Law Option, and a Religious Studies Option, as well as minors in Philosophy, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Middle East Studies.

The immediate need is for up to four class sections (3 units each = 12 units). This is a temporary position for Fall 2025. The department offers courses in Contemporary Moral Conflicts, Moral Questions, 19th Century Philosophy, 20th Century Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, and other courses. Position Summary (Course Catalog link)

The department seeks qualified candidate(s) to teach undergraduate courses such as:
  • Phil 25: Methods of Reasoning (Principles and methods of good reasoning. Typical topics:
    identification of argument structure, development of skills in deductive and inductive
    reasoning, assessing observations and testimony reports, language and reasoning, common
    fallacies).
  • Phil 150: Foundations of Knowledge (Nature, sources, and limits of human knowledge; roles of
    perception, reason, testimony, and intuition in acquiring rational beliefs; e.g. science,
    mathematics, values, the arts, religion, social issues, and psychological states.)
  • Phil 125W: Issues in Political Philosophy (Examination of prominent political philosophies and
    contemporary issues of politics and public policy. Policy issues may include the scope and limits
    of government authority, the role of government in the economy, foreign policy, health care,
    education, agriculture, and the environment. Meets the upper-division writing skills
    requirement for graduation.)

Instructor Responsibility: Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to and implementation of university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2. Instructors are responsible for the preparation, delivery, conducting, proctoring, and grading (as appropriate) lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams. All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e. asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the ‘Order of Work,‘ or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

Appointees will be required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for Temporary Faculty positions).

Compensation - Commensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement. The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers).

The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master‘s degree is $5,507-6,677 per a month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per an academic term.

Anticipated Semester

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Appointments from the pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The pool will remain in place for two academic terms; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply.

  • Fall 2025: August 18, 2025 - December 22, 2025;

  • Spring 2026: January 15, 2026 - May 22, 2026

Required Qualifications:

Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.): Ph.D. in Philosophy (advanced ABD will be considered)

Experience:

  1. Demonstrated commitment to excellence built on merit, talent, diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunity for all.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. A commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, which may be exhibited through prior teaching experiences and teaching evaluations or other evidence.

  2. Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
