Student Support Specialist

Position Overview:   This position is responsible for facilitating the implementation of a K-8 classroom support program by providing special instructions to teachers, parents, individuals and small groups of students with identified needs (both behavioral and academic). The Specialist utilizes best practices from the classical mode of instruction to provide essential academic support to our students and their families so that students with learning challenges can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.  This position will provide support services for all Palm Beach & Treasure Coast Christian Academy K-8 programs.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist in Admissions process:
  • Provide testing, assessment, and observation information to the Principal for assistance in determining feasibility of admission to the school. 
  • Assist the Principal in determining the best fit for academic placement for accepted students.
  • Identify and assess students who will require academic, emotional or behavioral support services.
  • Build a support network consisting of families, school administration, teachers and local professionals. 
  1. Provide support services to teachers:
  • Interpret psycho-educational evaluations and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans and Behavioral Intervention.
  • All accommodation and support plans must be designed to help teachers be successful in the PBCA classical model and reinforce PBCA guidelines and principles.
  • Collaborate with teachers and instructional aides to create support plans for effective instruction and classroom management.  Plans should address students who are experiencing difficulties in academic or behavioral progression as well as students who are excelling beyond the normal patterns of mastery.
  • Provide coaching tips and techniques to teachers and instructional aides related to implementation of created support plans.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences as needed / requested for students in need of support services.  
  1. Create support plans for students
  • Create plans designed to help students be successful in our distinct classical model.
  • Maintain required PBCA and state records, including initial assessments and plans, ongoing progress reports
  • Partner with local mental health professionals to support students and families.
  • Develop and implement a tracking and assessment system for student use of support services.
  • Review testing and assessment data to determine the levels of achievement and success of implemented support plans.
  • Track academic progress and provide support for students who are experiencing difficulties in learning and those who are excelling beyond the normal patterns of mastery.
  • Provide regular reports for assessment and planning related to the enrichment programs and their impact on the students learning progress. 
  1. Provide instructional and behavioral support to students and families:
  • Provide support for at-risk students with academic, social, and behavioral needs, which includes working with students individually, in small groups, within the classroom, and other student academic learning or behavioral services outside of the classroom.
  • Collaborate with teachers and instructional aides to create support plans, make recommendations for intervention and professional services, and coordinate the implementation of those interventions and services.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions, assessments, workshops, and activities for students and their families.
  • Provide coaching tips and techniques to teachers and instructional aides related to implementation of created support plans.
  • Participate in parent-administration conferences as needed / requested for students in need of or actively receiving support services. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in education, masters degree preferred.
  • Teaching certification with a specialization in specific educational programs or methodologies preferred.
  • Two to four years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs and abilities.
  • Experience in providing academic interventions and support services to students.
  • Experience in or willingness to learn the classical Christian model.
  • Evidence of strong Christian faith and values.
  • Demonstrates a strong Christian character and integrity.
  • Ability to meet all minimum eligibility requirements to be a member of Family Church.

About the Opportunity

BGCSF offers student support and enrichment programs at Gateway High School (GHS) . The goal is for every high school student at Gateway to graduate from high school with the skills, habits, and knowledge necessary for academic and personal success in college and beyond. The Student Support Coordinator will support two primary student programs: Enrichment Programs and Leadership Programs. Together, the two programs will ensure that students have strong academic instruction, wrap-around services and extracurricular activities. The Student Support Coordinator may also work closely with the BGCSF Site Director, Gateway Student Activities Director and other Gateway staff to support other student leadership and youth voice programs.


This position follows the school year calendar. This role offers 25-32 hours weekly during the school year, with the option of 6-8 weeks of work at another BGCSF Summer program. Hours will vary depending on programming and may include some evening and weekend work.

KEY ROLES (ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES):

Program Facilitation and Oversight – 70%

  • Meet with students weekly with various areas of focus, including collaboration with school administration and other decision-making bodies, supporting events related to a positive school climate, addressing student and community issues that may be impacting the culture of the school, and other topics decided on by the students
  • Develop curriculum that focuses on personal leadership development, social and emotional learning and facilitation.
  • Meet with Scholars to ensure they are completing their tutoring hours, providing case management, collaborating with parents and teachers, and considering opportunities for additional support, as needed
  • Manage the physical space of the Study Café, including defining and reinforcing appropriate student usage, and working with volunteers to maintain and improve the space
  • Serve as the teacher on record for Independent Study students, including defining the criteria for earning Independent Study credit, communicating with students and parents about their progress, taking daily attendance, and evaluating students on a pass/fail basis
  • Support Independent Study students in prioritizing and completing work
  • Provide CyberHigh support for students working on online credit recovery
  • Act as a liaison between the students and Gateway staff by managing and developing student ideas, working with school administration on proper implementation and connecting and involving Gateway teachers.
  • Transport students in Club vehicles or on public transportation as needed, according to BGCSF’s and GHS’s policies and procedures to ensure Club members’/students’ safety at all times

Administrative – 15%

  • Manage accurate and timely collection of attendance and participation data by accessing the database on a daily/weekly basis; analyze the data for any inconsistencies or incomplete entries and cross referencing actual numbers to goals.

Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities that enhance the likelihood that patients will achieve the FMC Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

DUTIES / ACTIVITIES:

PCT students must adhere to all facility and FMCNA policies and procedures.

Under the direction of the shift Nurse and direct supervision of their assigned PCT-P, the Student will:

* Take vital signs
* Escort patients to/from scale
* Weigh patients
* Prepare labs i.e., spinning, packaging
* Set-up machine including (testing and stringing)
* Pre initiation safety check
* Initiate or terminate a treatment on a patient with a fistula or graft
* Cannulation of fistula and graft
* Post treatment emptying of dialysis circuit
* Surface disinfect stations/machines
* Internal heat/chemical disinfect machines
* Remove needles and hold sites
* Check sites and apply bandages post treatment
* Check for residual disinfectant
* Hand crank in emergency
* Mix bleach water
* Check blood sugars
* Draw blood cultures and labs
* Obtain pH and conductivity of machine
* Prepare dialysate
* Check residual chloramine and chlorine in water used to prepare dialysate

The PCT student can NOT:

* Initiate and terminate a treatment of a patient with a catheter
* Perform catheter care
* Perform any functions outside of the standard of practice for the position or as allowed under state boards of nursing or other state licensing programs

All clinical placement students who work more than 160 hours will be required to complete Compliance training within 45 days of hire.

The student will be responsible for completing a survey at the end of each rotation

The employee may occasionally be required to push and/or pull equipment, exerting up to 15 pounds of force.
