Job Summary

The Art Instructor - Visual Arts will be responsible for leading classes of 5-15 boys, ages 6 through 12. We are seeking a reliable, highly motivated candidate with a strong record of working with young people. This  opportunity is for an engaging Teaching Artist to teach Studio/Art (i.e. sculpture, painting, sculpture, illustration, graphic design and i-movie, etc.).  The Art Instructor - Visual Arts will plan and implement an age-appropriate and engaging art program to help members develop confidence and self-expression. They will  engage and teach students by implementing a range of activities.  The Art Instructor - Visual Arts will also be responsible for effective classroom management, supervision, and safety of members, ensuring an enjoyable, challenging and meaningful experience. 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and practice that provides students with opportunities to observe, investigate, and practice skills.
  • Teach lessons using various fine art techniques and materials.
  • Assist with daily set-up, daily clean up, and transportation.
  • Model and enforce adherence to sound health and safety practices for each member.   
  • Engage with members and use appropriate strategies to preemptively defuse inappropriate behavior and encourage positive interactions. 
  • Prepare and administer written, oral, and performance assessments, and determine progress.
  • Review instructional content, methods, and student performance in order to assess strengths and weaknesses, and develop recommendations for curriculum revision, development, or elimination.
  • Responsible for completing and the timely submission of all program reports relative to this position, including but not limited to supply requests, lesson plans and timesheets.
  • Ensure proper care of all area materials, organize room and report any misused or damaged materials to the department director in order to prevent injuries or damage.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school
  • At least 2 years relevant training, 2 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience facilitating middle school or high school youth visual arts programs
  • Experience with multiple computer programs and software (e.g., Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects)
  • Advanced knowledge of Computer graphics, Web design, Animation, Online search skills  
  • Experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth with a sound understanding of the social and cultural issues facing urban families is preferred  
  • Demonstrated leadership in an educational, social service and/or youth development setting
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and to address the varying needs of the boys in our program
  • Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and self-assuredness
  • First Aid and CPR certification desirable

The position must use a variety of design elements to achieve artistic or decorative effects. Also, the Director of Graphic Design must work with text and images usually selecting the type, font, size, color, and line length of headlines, headings, and text. The Director must decide how images and text will go together on a print or webpage, including how much space each will have. When using text in layouts, the Director of Graphic Design must make sure that the staff collaborates closely with writers who choose the words and decide whether the words will be put into paragraphs, lists, or tables. Through the use of images, text, and color, the team can transform statistical data into visual graphics and diagrams, which can make complex ideas more accessible.

The Director of Graphic Design is essential to AZHCC successful marketing and events. The position plays a critical role in the creation of brochures and logos. Therefore, the Director of Graphic Design must supervise and closely collaborate with other positions within the organization, such as the Marketing Manager, Branding Manager, Media Consultant, and Marketing Specialist. This collaboration is essential for advertising, promotions, public relations, and overall marketing efforts. The Director of Graphic Design oversees the execution of the strategic marketing plan, providing creative direction and guidance to design teams working on the organization's brand (AZHCC) and sub-brands, such as "Ambassadors Meeting," "Buenos Dias Networking Breakfast," "Contactos After 5 Mixers," "Business Bootcamp," and "New Member Orientation." Additionally, the Director exercises judgment in the final work product before publication. A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field is required.
