Union Pacific is hiring a Rail Car Technician in Chicago,
Illinois.
As a Rail Car Technician, you will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of freight cars and other rail rolling stock. Your work is essential to ensuring the safety and reliability of our extensive rail network. You will perform routine inspections, diagnose mechanical issues, and execute repairs according to strict safety standards and operational procedures. This role requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Rail Car Technician, you will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of freight cars and other rail rolling stock. Your work is essential to ensuring the safety and reliability of our extensive rail network. You will perform routine inspections, diagnose mechanical issues, and execute repairs according to strict safety standards and operational procedures. This role requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect freight cars for defects, damage, or wear according to Union Pacific standards and federal regulations (e.g., Federal Railroad Administration - FRA).
- Perform repairs on various components, including brakes, wheels, trucks, couplers, and car bodies.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment to complete repairs.
- Conduct preventative maintenance tasks to ensure rail cars are in good working condition.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and structural issues.
- Document inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities accurately.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout and confined space entry.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects and equipment.
- Requires standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing on and around rail cars.
- Operate railway maintenance equipment safely (training provided if needed).
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
- Participate in training programs related to rail car maintenance and safety.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Identify and report any safety hazards.
- Follow work orders and repair instructions precisely.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment as required.
- May be required to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training or vocational school in a related field (e.g., mechanical, welding) is a plus.
- Previous experience in railway maintenance, heavy equipment repair, or a related mechanical field is preferred.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills are essential.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals and diagrams.
- Welding or fabrication skills are a strong advantage.
- Must pass physical and drug screening.
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary certifications.
- Must be authorized to work in the US.
