Dow is seeking a Research Scientist specializing in Materials Science to join our R&D team in Columbus, Ohio. You will conduct fundamental and applied research to develop new materials or improve existing ones for various applications. This involves designing experiments, synthesizing and characterizing materials, analyzing data, and collaborating with engineers and product development teams to translate research into commercial products.
Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments for the synthesis and characterization of new materials.
- Utilize various analytical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, microscopy, chromatography) to analyze material properties.
- Interpret experimental data and draw scientific conclusions.
- Develop new methodologies and techniques for material research.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, chemists, and product developers.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and documentation.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications.
- Present research findings to internal teams and external scientific communities.
- Stay current with the latest scientific literature and advancements in materials science.
- Identify opportunities for new material development and application.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and laboratory procedures.
- Manage research projects, including setting goals and timelines.
- Troubleshoot experimental issues.
- Mentor junior scientists or technicians.
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property (patents).
- Work in a team-oriented research environment.
- Analyze materials for structure-property relationships.
- Support scale-up efforts from laboratory to pilot plant.
- Participate in scientific conferences and workshops.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is required.
- Postdoctoral experience is a plus.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in industrial research and development is preferred.
- Strong background in materials synthesis, characterization, and analysis.
- Proficiency with relevant laboratory equipment and analytical techniques.
- Proven ability to design and execute complex experiments.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.
- Track record of scientific publications or patent applications is a plus.
- Knowledge of polymer chemistry or materials for specific applications (e.g., packaging, construction) is desirable.
- Commitment to safety and good laboratory practices.
- Ability to manage research projects effectively.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience with data analysis software.
