Our R&D Machine Shop Manager will lead our operations, manage a team of driven technicians, and guide our R&D prototyping process.

You will report to the Executive R&D Imagineer, Research and Development.

This is a Full-Time role.

What You Will Do:

  •  Lead day-to-day operations of the R&D Machine Shop, including scheduling, workflow prioritization, and resource allocation.

  • Manage a team of technicians, fostering a culture of collaboration, craftsmanship, and creative problem-solving.

  • Partner closely with R&D Imagineers, ride engineers, and show teams to translate design intent into physical prototypes.

  • Oversee safe shop practices and ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards.

  • Maintain and develop machine shop and woodshop capabilities, including equipment, tooling, and techniques.

  • Guide the prototyping process from concept through delivery, balancing speed, testing, quality, and technical feasibility.

  • Mentor and develop talent, providing technical coaching and supporting career growth.

  • Collaborate across Walt Disney Imagineering to share best practices, drive innovation, and scale prototype solutions into full project development.

  • Embrace flexibility and adaptability as the team learns through prototyping and playtesting, adjusting strategy as needed

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory or managerial experience, and 10 years overall experience, in a machine shop, fabrication environment, or R&D prototyping environment.

  • Deep knowledge of fabrication methods (machining, sheet metal, welding, wood, additive/subtractive manufacturing, 3D printing, rapid prototyping techniques) and shop safety standards.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage diverse teams of skilled tradespeople, engineers, and technicians.

  • Ability to provide clear, direct feedback to other team members

  • Proven track record of delivering prototypes that inform engineering decisions, design intent, and guest experience outcomes.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, iterative environment.

  • Ability to coordinate and manage vendors and workloads performed outside the R&D Studio

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience working in themed entertainment, movies/TV SFX, aerospace, automotive, or related industries with a focus on prototyping and innovation.

  • Familiarity with design and engineering processes, from blue sky to implementation.

  • Ability to inspire creativity while maintaining operational discipline and safety.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field required, or equivalent professional experience.

The Ride Control Systems Engineer will report to the Executive Ride Control Systems Engineer.

This is a full time role.

What You Will Do:

  • Manage entire scope to conceive, design, & deliver control systems for a wide variety of complex and innovative ride systems and related equipment.
  • Conduct systems engineering for ride control systems.
  • Define system use cases and user needs.
  • Develop and capture requirements and functional specifications in documents, drawings, and models.
  • Ensure compliance with control system safety standards.

    You will report to the Executive, Ride Controls Systems Engineering

    This is a full time role.

    What You Will Do:

    • Conduct design assurance activities in standards and best practices development, partnering with ride engineering partners across Disney Experiences and the amusement ride industry.

    • Stay abreast of, and participate in the development of, company and industry standards and methodologies.

    • Participate in company committees and industry organizations involved in ride safety and design.

    • Maintain and improve engineering processes to meet project delivery and design assurance objectives.

    • Conduct design assurance activities for ride project design review and testing, partnering with ride project team members. 

    • Review ride system design and test packages for compliance with industry and company standards.

    • Assess whether designs are of appropriate quality and meet project requirements.

    • Advise project teams on optimal ride control system designs, safety analysis methods and results, and testing approaches.

    • Prepare and present Disney requirements and design practices for 3rd party training.

    • Mentor and train ride control engineers.

    • Prepare and present Disney requirements and design practices for internal training.

    • Advocate the processes, standards, and practices that produce quality designs.

    • Mentor and assist design engineers with technical challenges, standards, and methodology.

    • Mentor ride engineers in design excellence.

    Required Qualifications & Skills

    • 10+ years of experience with ride control system design, engineering, installation, and commissioning

    • Proficient in fail-safe and safety-related control system design

    • Experience with requirements development, test plans/procedures, and test execution

    • Extensive knowledge of ride control system architectures and equipment

    • Solid understanding of communication protocols: TCP/IP, CAN, serial, ProfiNET, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT

    • Proficient in automated control system design applying functional safety concepts and standards

    • Demonstrated practice in functional safety standards, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO 13849

    • Familiarity with amusement and automation industry standards, including ASTM F2291

    • Solid skills in technical document writing and communication

    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for 1-week to 3-month durations

    • Ability to handle multiple complex efforts simultaneously, exert influence, and manage tasks and priorities

    Preferred Qualifications & Skills

    • Knowledge of amusement industry standards applicable in Japan, France, Hong Kong, and China

    • Proficient in Rockwell, Siemens, and Beckhoff automation systems architecture and components

    • Expertise in motor and motion control methods and components

    • Solid understanding of kinematics as it pertains to ride systems and machines

    • Knowledge of pneumatic controls and devices

    • Proficient with engineering applications, including AutoCAD, EPlan, Matlab, Simulink, Solidworks, Visure

    • Knowledge of modeling methodologies using UML/SysML

    • Experience with multitasking software platforms and design approaches

    • Experience in broad application of control system theory (closed-loop control, MIMO systems, positioning and navigation)

    • Certified Functional Safety Engineer

    Education

    • Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, computer science, or related field from an accredited university required. (Electrical Engineering preferred)

    • Post Graduate Degree preferred

    What You’ll Do (Essential Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Maintain responsibility for the overall management and leadership of a Tempur Sealy retail store.
