Summary:

At the ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH), were on a mission to save lives and ease suffering. We provide critical care to victims of cruelty and neglect, working hand-in-hand with both internal partnersour ASPCA Adoption Center, Kitten Nursery, and Community Advocate Teamand external partners like the NYPD and other NYC organizations. Our Licensed Veterinary Technicians are the heart of AAHdedicated, level-headed professionals with a passion for animal welfare and the skills to thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. They collaborate seamlessly with our veterinary medical team to deliver top-tier, practical care, ensuring every patientwhether an outpatient or in-hospitalreceives efficient, skilled, and compassionate treatment. * This is an overnight schedule and the target hiring range for this role is $34.60 - $7.00 (plus a shift differential for overnight hours). In addition to a competitive salary this role offers a signing bonus and a relocation bonus is available for people living in a qualifying distance from our facility. Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Nursing Care and Client Services (40%)

  • Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts
  • Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times utilizing Fear Free Guidelines.
  • Proficient in various technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
  • Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills
  • Able to prioritize and re-prioritize based on hospital and patient needs
  • Proficient in animal handling and restraint for various medical procedures
  • Treat animals and clients with care and respect.
  • Competently explain to client, information doctor has documented about an animals condition.
  • Document and communicate and patient concerns or observed changes to Veterinarian
  • Feed and medicate patients following veterinarian and LVT instructions
  • Lift patients up to 40 pounds
  • Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques

Professionalism, Communication, and Performance (40%)

  • Represent ASPCA in professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Provide management with regular feedback about training needs, new hires, coworkers, interns, hospital needs, etc.

  • Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Take inventory and stock supplies as needed.
  • Assist in keeping supplies stocked by noting when supplies are running low in all departments.
  • Make certain entire hospital including treatment, surgery, exam rooms and kennels are kept extremely clean through the day.

The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) and CARE (Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment) facilities are dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCAs Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.

Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high quality care for the animals we serve.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician at the ASPCA Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment (CARE) is responsible for a broad range of medical and administrative tasks in the CARE that serves animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program. The LVT delivers compassionate nursing care and has a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology, shelter medicine, behavior, and proficient mathematical skills.

One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering operations personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for victims of cruelty and neglect.

The schedule is Sundays-Wednesdays from 9a-7p.

Responsibilities:

Nursing and Shelter Population Care (50%)

  • Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts

  • Care for up to 40 dogs per day.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Functional Duties (85%)

  • Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques

  • Observe individual animals and the overall population for signs of illness, injury, and/or poor welfare, communicating any issues quickly and effectively

  • Provide veterinary medical care within the scope of license, including but not limited to basic examinations and triage, surgical support, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, administering and monitoring anesthesia, diagnostic testing, radiographs, CPCR, and humane euthanasia

  • Monitor patients post-operatively to ensure safety and comfort and to identify possible post-operative or anesthesia-related complications

  • Perform, or be willing to be trained to perform, dental cle anings and radiographs

  • Oversee the implementation of preventative, vaccination, and treatment schedules, ensuring all animals are up-to-date

  • Handle, administer, and log controlled substances under the direction of a veterinarian and in accordance with laws and protocols

  • Maintain active knowledge of all daily procedures and protocols

  • Ensure thorough, accurate , and timely data entry to animals medical records including previous medical history and all exam findings, test results, and treatments

  • Support the collection of evidence and documentation of examinations of live and deceased victims of animal cruelty, including clinical forensic exams and gross necropsies

  • Follow all protocols to ensure chain of custody is maintained and appropriately documented, and for the disposition of forensic evidence

  • Obtain relevant continuing education as required by the ASPCA and the state licensing board

  • Competently and compassionately explain an animals condition to other staff and volunteers with easily understood language

  • Collaborate with behavior and sheltering colleagues to ensure holistic, balanced care for animals and a cohesive team culture for staff

  • Communicate regularly with the behavior team using objective language and established communication systems to ensure information is shared in a timely fashion with relevant stakeholders

  • Track inventory and ensure veterinary areas are well stocked at all times

  • Identify and communicate inventory and ordering needs

  • Assist in staff training across all areas, ensuring all staff understand shelter disease control protocols, nutritional guidelines, preventative and vaccination schedules, and the importance of daily monitoring

  • Stay abreast of shelter medicine practices and trends and ensure their consistent application

  • Ensure medical areas are kept clean, organized, and ready for use
