Kennel Team Member
Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide for the daily care of boarding and day-care pets. This includes feeding, watering, cleaning, walking, bathing, medicating, and monitoring the well being of dogs, cats and, occasionally, other companion animals. This position requires a love of animals and the ability to warmly welcome and compassionately care for a wide variety of pets.
Kennel team members use excellent communication and client-service skills to admit and discharge pets and reassure nervous clients that their pets will be well cared for. Kennel team members demonstrate professional and courteous behavior toward clients and coworkers while handling multiple tasks, even during many interruptions.
Kennel team members empathize with clients and remain compassionate and well-mannered if a client becomes emotional or discourteous. They strongly believe in the quality of care provided and communicate this sense of assurance to clients. Kennel team members understand services and health recommendations for boarders and day-care pets and clearly communicate them to clients when admitting pets.
The Kennel Team Member administers medications to and bathes pets, including those that are fearful and/or aggressive. The Team Member monitors pets for signs of distress or disease and provides for the comfort of pets and sanitation of the facility by keeping the kennel area and grounds clean and odor-free.
Must be able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste, and contagious diseases.
Reporting Structure
Directly reports to Practice Manager.
Primary Responsibilities
General
• Understands and applies hospital policies and procedures.
• Keeps kennel and grounds clean, orderly, and clutter-free.
• Removes trash, sweeps, and mops daily.
• Launders bedding and surgical linens.
• Stocks supplies as needed.
• Attends staff and departmental meetings.
Client Relations
• Answers the telephone by third ring in courteous and friendly manner.
• Properly admits and releases all patients for the boarding kennel.
• Answers phone shoppers’ questions, establishing value associated with the services the facility provides.
• Verifies accurate health and vaccination history for all boarding and grooming patients.
• Obtains information from owner regarding pet’s medical needs and communicates it to the appropriate hospital staff.
• Obtains and documents information regarding accurate medications and administration, communicating that information to the appropriate hospital staff.
• Obtains and documents information concerning grooming services desired by clients.
• Places appointment-reminder phone calls, and provides clients with pre-appointment information or instructions.
• Communicates medical recommendations and reviews treatment plans with clients when services are due for admitted patients.
• Recommends additional services to clients, such as bath, groom, pedicure, and/or pamper session.
• Prepares paperwork for boarding/grooming patients.
• Reviews invoices, sets next appointments, and answers clients’ questions.
• Ensures client information is current via phone or in person.
Animal Care
• Provides compassionate patient care, including keeping patients clean, dry, and comfortable and alerting hospital to changes in patients’ condition while boarding.
• Administers flea medication on admit and release days.
• Medicates patients and logs medication data in computer.
• Records weight at admit and every seven days during stay.
• Applies name band to patient at admit and removes before release.
• Puts pets in secure cage with water and attaches necessary paperwork (cage card).
• Plays with pets during daily play times.
• Notes any concerns about pets’ medical condition, and contacts clients to obtain permission for medical treatment.
• Cleans and sterilizes runs and cages daily.
• Walks (three times per day), feeds, and medicates (as instructed) animals, and logs that data daily.
• Monitors and logs daily urination and defecation habits and any occurrence of vomiting or diarrhea.
• Bathes, trims nails of, and brushes out patients.
Personal Conduct
• Adheres to all hospital policies, standards, and procedures, including but not limited to uniforms, grooming, smoking, and personal calls, as stated in the hospital procedures manual.
• Serves as a representative of the hospital, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients, and other staff members.
• Demonstrates initiative in everyday duties by seeking other work during down times, assisting other employees, and filling in for other employees as needed.
• Adheres to the posted work schedule. Arrives for work promptly and begins work at the start time. Follows hospital policies for reporting lateness or absences.
• Utilizes the time clock to clock in and out at the beginning and end of each day and during breaks.
• Organizes work area and exercises time-management skills to maximize personal efficiency.
• Prioritizes tasks and handles multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner.
Additional Duties
• Attends departmental and staff meetings.
• Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
• Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
• Availability to occasionally work uncommon hours and overtime and to be recalled in emergency situations.
• Excellent animal-handling skills, including the confidence and dexterity to administer medications to and bathe animals.
• Ability to properly restrain patients.
• Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted without direct supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to show empathy toward clients and treat animals with respect and compassion.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• A commitment to outstanding client service.
• Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance.

Responsibilities- Handle cats and/or dogs and occasional other animals of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately.
- Follow and maintain excellent knowledge of organization cleaning, sanitation, and disease prevention protocols to provide a safe, clean environment for all.
- Provide all animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys and other mental stimulation and enrichment, social interaction with humans and, where appropriate, members of own species.
- Maintain excellent knowledge of all shelter standard medical procedures, vaccines, preventatives, and common diseases and their symptoms, transmission, prevention.
- Monitor physical and behavioral health of animals and rapidly identify any health issues and report to Veterinary staff or supervisor.
- Use shelter database and employee communication systems to keep accurate animal inventory, write animal behavior and other memos, submit medical exam requests, place holds on animals, and keep abreast of all staff communication.
- Work with staff and volunteers to get to know, provide for, transition, and promote adoptable animals.
- Ensure all animals are clearly and consistently marked with accurate, up-to-date, easy to read information.
- Work with and supervise volunteers appropriately to provide animals and humans with a safe, clean, organized, and pleasant experience.
- Assist Veterinary staff by properly administering or restraining for vaccinations, microchips, blood draws, medications, and restraining for exams.

What You Should Know:
You’ll be on your feet often—standing, walking, climbing stairs, wrangling leashes.
Must be able to lift 40 lbs (bags of food, pet crates, sleepy bulldogs—you know).
Availability on evenings, weekends, and holidays required (pets don’t take days off).
Exposure to cleaning supplies, pet hair, and, ahem, “accidents” is part of the gig.

Welcoming pet parents and their furry VIPs like they just walked into a 5-star resort (but with more shedding).
Answering phones with a smile in your voice and multi-tasking like a pro.
Touring new clients through the facility and selling the services that keep tails wagging.
Ensuring up-to-date vaccinations are on file—because safety first.
Managing check-ins and check-outs with efficiency and a personal touch (and the occasional treat).
Handling cash, cards, and balancing the end-of-day cash drawer like the organized rockstar you are.
Responding to complaints with patience and professionalism— even when it’s clearly the cat’s fault.
Escorting pet guests to and from their enclosures with the care of a concierge and the patience of a preschool teacher.
Keeping the lobby clean, welcoming, and ready for first impressions and sweet reunions.
Jumping in to support other team members whenever needed. We’re all in this together.
What You Bring to the Table:
You’re a people-person and a pet-person.
Previous experience in customer service or retail? Heck yes.
You’ve got solid communication chops—phone, in-person, email, you name it.
Multi-line phones and computer systems don’t scare you.
You're cool under pressure and know how to keep things professional (even when someone’s barking—and we don’t mean the dog).
You solve problems faster than a lab chasing a tennis ball.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
1+ year of customer service experience preferred.

The Animal Health Technician I (AHT I) is under the direct supervision of the Comparative Medicine Veterinarian. This is an entry level position and the job experience responsibilities include knowledge and application of relevant laboratory animal medicine standards, rules, and regulations and performing animal health technician tasks under direct or indirect supervision. The AHT I participates in maintaining the health and welfare of research animals in the vivarium, maintaining animal welfare standards, providing procedural support to research staff, and training research and comparative medicine staff on animal handling and techniques. The AHT I must be a motivated, self-starter who demonstrates a commitment to quality work, the ability to work effectively in teams, high emotional intelligence,and fosters a positive, professional environment as well as a culture of respect. The AHT I has a solid comprehension and ability to use basic computer programs including email and has good oral and written communication skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clinical Care responsibilities - provides triage, presumptive diagnosis, treatment and follow up as needed for animals at CSMC. Communicates the cases to appropriate individuals and documents them using paper based and electronic systems.
- United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Covered Species Procedural Support - Assists with surgical and non-surgical procedures in USDA covered species including pre surgical preparation, sedation, anesthesia inductions, administration, monitoring and recovery. Documents activities timely and accurately in medical records and other templates.
- USDA Covered Species Procedure Scheduling - Assists with scheduling appointments for large animal procedures which require Comparative Medicine procedural support.
- Executes assigned tasks to support the Environmental Enrichment Program.
- Maintains working knowledge of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (to include hazardous agents).
- Equipment and room maintenance - Performs inventory, quality control checks, safety checks, and cleaning of clinical support equipment such as anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment including inventory and maintenance of assigned rooms and associated supplies within the vivarium.
- Conducts inventory and maintenance of assigned rooms and replenishes associated supplies within the vivarium.
- Executes assigned tasks to support the maintenance of the Rodent Biosecurity program.
- Trains researchers and technical staff on animal handling and restraint, dosing, blood collection, and other non-surgical techniques needed for studies.
- Assists with ensuring regulatory compliance (Post-Approval Monitoring and Facility Inspection Readiness).
- Participates in a weekend rotation to provide clinical support for research animals including dosing of medication and triage and treatment of health cases.
- Controlled Substances program – Handles and utilizes controlled substances in accordance with the Controlled Substances SOP.
- Attends all Staff and Team meetings as requested by the Supervisor
- Creates documents for any of the above-listed programs as requested by the Supervisor.
Qualifications
Education:
- A High School Diploma/GED is required. A graduate of an AVMA-CVTEA or CVMA accredited veterinary technology program is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Eligibility for certification by AALAS at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) level upon hire.
- Valid and current driver's license is required.
Experience and Skills:
- One (1) year of experience working in a laboratory animal setting is required.
- Ability to learn, apply and maintain compliance with the rules and regulations governing the care and use of animals in research.
- Demonstrates a high standard of ethics and integrity with regards to animal welfare.
- Ability to provide and/or support a level of work excellence and accuracy; recognize and address flaws or errors that others may overlook. Ability to document tasks in an orderly, timely, and accurate manner.
- Ability to convey and/or receive written/verbal information to/from various audiences in different formats.
- Ability to demonstrate time management skills.
- Ability to appropriately prioritize tasks to complete more critical or urgent items first.
- Ability to use software applications and operate technological devices (e.g., computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.). Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and ability to learn other systems that support clinical work in the vivarium.
