Lincoln Park Zoo is seeking a full-time Director to lead its Animal Welfare Science Program. This program takes a strategic, science-driven approach to advancing animal welfare and maximizing positive outcomes for animals in our care and beyond. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, the Director will provide visionary leadership and oversee all aspects of the program’s operations. This includes strategic visioning in collaboration with senior leadership, implementation and evaluation of program activities, integration with animal care, scientific oversight, authoring scientific publications, managing scientific staff, budgeting, public speaking, engaging with donors, maintaining leadership within the AZA community, and collaborating with the zoo’s accredited sanctuary and animal advocacy partners. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- In alignment with the zoo’s strategic plan, leads the development and implementation of objectives for the Animal Welfare Science Program by identifying priorities and creating plans to ensure successful outcomes
- Research experience or interest in: Capacity building and tool development; understanding the human-animal influence; impact of choice and agency on animals, and advancing welfare science of understudied species.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with internal and external partners to advocate for science-based practices in policy and legislation
- Supervises and supports the team, including Ph.D.-level scientists, a research assistant, and interns, fostering professional development and scientific growth
- Prioritizes, supervises and conducts research that serves to advance scientific understanding of animal welfare across taxa
- Collaborates with animal managers and care staff to co-develop and implement research that generates actionable knowledge regarding animal welfare at Lincoln Park Zoo.
- Recruits, mentors, and develops staff, students and volunteers to build capacity in the design and execution of rigorous animal welfare research.

- Ensures timely data analysis and dissemination of information that can support animal management decisions to continue advancing animal welfare

- Disseminates and translates research findings in an accessible manner to zoo staff from various departments including Animal Care and Horticulture, Learning, Conservation and Science, and Development

- Partners with the Development Department to secure funding in support of the Animal Welfare Science Program, including drafting grant proposals, meeting with donors, attending events, and preparing reports

- Tracks and summarizes program activities, outcomes, and impact for internal and external reporting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- PhD in Psychology, Biology or closely related scientific discipline, with a strong record of peer-reviewed research.

The Coordinator, Adoptions is responsible for the effective and efficient placement of animals through direct adoptions. The person in this role introduces potential adopters to appropriate dogs , ensuring it is a safe and positive interaction for all involved, and works with internal partners to arrange and carry-out transport of adoptable dogs to adoption events and placement partners.
The successful candidate is a true collaborator, working closely and consistently with colleagues in the R&R Center and across the ASPCA, as well as directly with adopters, to find suitable homes for dogs as quickly as possible.

The R&R Center in Pawling, NY, is a unique program dedicated to providing integrated sheltering, behavioral, and medical care for canine victims of cruelty. The R&R Center team works closely with ASPCA teams in New York City to help animals rescued in partnership with the NYPD.
This is an in-person position in Pawling, NY with a target start date of October 6, 2025.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Functional Duties (80%)
Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
Read and follow all kennel signage regarding animal treatment and care.
Proactively monitor adoptions pipeline, ensuring adequate resources to expedite placement
Maintain open lines of communication wi th the Adoption Center in NYC, arranging transfer and/or exchange of animals based on the greatest potential for successful and expedient placement
Maintain up to date knowledge of each dog in care and ready for placement
Provide compelling biographical information for public facing dog adoption profiles, showcasing each animals positive attributes as well as challenges
Work directly with adopters to ensure high quality placements, creating a positive experience for dogs and potential adopters, eliminating ineffective barriers to adoption
Collaborate with veterinary, behavioral, and sheltering colleagues to develop a transition plan for each dog, minimizing post-adoption setbacks and pain points
Conduct post-adoption follow-up calls and/or emails and serve as a point of contact for adopters in need of advice or assistance post-placement
Provide back-up support for transport, working directly with internal and external partners to plan and execute the transfer of animals , as needed
Safely and humanely transport dogs, some of which are medically and/or behaviorally compromised, to and from ASPCA facilities, veterinary partners, off-site adoption events, and potential adopter meetings
Assist the Coordinator, Transport in maintaining the R&R Centers fleet and transport supplies, as needed
Provide back-up support for the Care & Enrichment Team, assisting in daily animal care tasks as the need arises and time allows

Position Summary:
The Certified Animal Rescue Responder is a core member of the American Humane Society (AHS) Rescue team, responsible for planning and executing disaster response efforts for animals and providing mutual aid resources to law enforcement, national, tribal, state and local entities, with large-scale animal cruelty investigations.
This critical role involves managing and deploying the fleet, equipment, and supplies to ensure readiness for rapid response, including overseeing logistical operations, leading special projects, acquiring necessary resources, and fostering partnerships through networking, training, presentations, and mutual aid responses.
Responsibilities:
Emergency Response & Field Operations
- Deploy during disasters and assist law enforcement in large-scale animal cruelty cases.
- Provide care to rescued animals and manage field logistics (travel, shelter, supplies).
- Lead and support Reserves (volunteers/contractors) before, during, and after responses.
- Coordinate with Incident Command and make timely decisions on personnel and resources.
- Track deployment resources and contribute to after-action reports.
- Support communications by capturing stories and visuals for fundraising and public awareness.
- Oversee logistics planning and execution, including fleet, equipment, and supply readiness.
- Ensure compliance with registration and licensing requirements (DOT/local/state).

- In coordination with the full Rescue team, promote, plan, and deliver emergency response and sheltering training tailored for Reserves (volunteers and contractors), the general public, first responders, and other interested participants.
- Ensure that AHS Rescue’s training programs and materials are up-to-date, effective, and approved by the Communications team in accordance with the organization’s mission and branding standards.
- Actively recruit and promote AHS Rescue Reserve volunteer program participation.
- Represent AHS at selected public events, embodying the organization's mission and values.
- Serve as the Rescue team’s primary onsite representative at the American Humane Society Sanctuary in Palm City, FL, welcoming guests, donors, and community members with professionalism and warmth.
- Engage donors and supporters during visits, ensuring a positive and mission-aligned experience.
- Working in collaboration with Sanctuary staff, Development team members and other relevant staff, accept and process in-kind donations from the public and partners as needed, working with Development to ensure appropriate acknowledgments are provided and ensuring items are handled according to Sanctuary procedures.
- Interact regularly with volunteers, providing guidance, support, and helping to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
- Maintain a consistent and visible presence in the surrounding community and throughout southern Florida to support daily operations, serve as a point of contact, and represent the organization to the public.
- Coordinate with Sanctuary staff to ensure the facility is visitor-ready and operations are aligned with organizational standards of care and professionalism.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing logistics and providing resource support.
- 3 to 5 years of animal handling experience is strongly preferred; if not, a willingness and ability to complete an animal handling course within 90 days of hire is required.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree, technical training, or equivalent experience – such as RVT, FEMA employee/reservist, or animal control/humane officer – is strongly preferred.
- Direct experience with vehicles, trailers, and heavy equipment, including inspecting equipment, hooking up or pulling a trailer, or a willingness and ability to learn.
- A Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is advantageous but not mandatory.
- At least 1 year of experience with emergency response situations is preferred.
- Has completed or is willing to complete Incident Command System 100, 200, 700, 800, ICS 300, and 400 within 90 days of hire.
- Field qualified for Animal Search and Rescue, or the willingness and ability to achieve qualification within one year.
- Familiarity with various emergency service organizations and their functions, such as the State Office of Emergency Management, State Veterinary Offices, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is a plus.
- Skilled in fostering collaborative relationships and showing diplomacy with various groups, including volunteers, first responders, emergency management officials, government agencies, animal rescue organizations, and the general public.

Physical demands and work environment:
