The Director of Veterinary Services, CARE will perform all the duties of a licensed veterinarian, including providing compassionate, high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk animals and supervise LVTs .

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Managing Medical Cases (60%):

  • Ensure CARE provides high quality individualized care, considering the medical and behavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
  • Serve on a panel with medical, behavior, and operations leaders to review cases and make weekly pathway planning decisions, including humane euthanasia decisions, taking into consideration animals’ physical and behavioral well-being, using organizationally aligned tools developed to assess quality of life and readiness for adoption.
  • Perform humane euthanasia for animals deemed unsuitable for placement, working closely with the behavior and medical teams to ensure a compassionate, low-stress procedure.
  • Perform medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center as needed.
  • Provide medical support for large scale NYPD and CE cases.
  • Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling.  Ensure all staff are practicing Fear Free handing.
  • Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.  
  • Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center and placement partners.
  • Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
  • Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care, and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals.
  • Respond to after-hours medical concerns.
  • Oversee and maintain the CARE animal census.

People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%):

  • Oversee the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housed in CARE.
  • Lead the Daily CARE rounds meeting.
  • Lead monthly CARE LVT meeting.
  • Develop, disseminate, and keep current the CARE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure their implementation. Facility-specific SOPs are developed in conjunction with ARC, AAH, Adoption Center, BST to ensure best medical, sheltering, and behavioral practices.
  • Model a standard of continued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of CARE including, medical, behavior, housing, safety, and animal flow.
  • Set expectations and goals and provide consistent, high-quality feedback to direct reports, including regular 1:1s and quarterly feedback sessions to build strong relationships, provide clear direction, and encourage opportunities for development. Complete annual performance evaluations.
  • Practice and espouse positive, people-centric management approaches that are in line with team and organizational core values.
  • Recommend internal and external training opportunities as needed for direct reports in identified areas.
  • Respond to concerns from direct reports and selected administrative staff, addressing them promptly and accordingly.
  • Handle employee-relations issues with confidentiality and care, ensuring compliance with any applicable collective-bargaining agreements.
  • Conduct corrective actions related to performance.
  • Maintain proactive communication with the Senior Director as to any critical situations or issues.
  • Support the Senior Director of Veterinary Services in handling any adverse client or patient events appropriately and professionally.
  • Model a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of CARE animal care and handling of dogs and cats.
  • Serve as a champion in times of change management and proactively partner with the ARC and CARE Leadership team in identifying ways to improve people policies and medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with the AAH Office Manager and Direct of Veterinary Services to ensure CARE has appropriate DVM coverage 7 days per week.
  • In collaboration with the AAH management team, ensure the CARE veterinary team is scheduled for all required training, meetings, and lectures.

Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)

  • Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Center departments.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings.
  • Provide medical information and represent CARE to the public and to media when requested.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
  • Create, model, and follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and CARE Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assist with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that combines individual patient and shelter medicine and effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity and accountability and without loss of attention to detail.

  • Maintain an open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols.

  • Able to occasionally work in physically challenging conditions and able to wear appropriate protective gear, including a protective mask; job responsibilities may entail exposure to chemical and biological hazards, such as feces and blood, exposure to sharp objects, working in noisy environments and working in areas with uneven, wet, and slippery surfaces.
  • The Director may be requested and/or required to work additional hours, weekends, cover shifts and/or stay late.

Compensation and benefits:

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future. 

The target hiring range for this role is $169,500-$179,500. In addition to a competitive salary, this role offers a signing bonus.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Managing Medical Cases (60%):

  • Ensure CARE provides high quality individualized care, considering the medical and behavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
  • Serve on a panel with medical, behavior, and operations leaders to review cases and make weekly pathway planning decisions, including humane euthanasia decisions, taking into consideration animals’ physical and behavioral well-being, using organizationally aligned tools developed to assess quality of life and readiness for adoption.
  • Perform humane euthanasia for animals deemed unsuitable for placement, working closely with the behavior and medical teams to ensure a compassionate, low-stress procedure.
  • Perform medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center as needed.
  • Provide medical support for large scale NYPD and CE cases.
  • Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling.  Ensure all staff are practicing Fear Free handing.
  • Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.  
  • Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center and placement partners.
  • Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
  • Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care, and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals.
  • Respond to after-hours medical concerns.
  • Oversee and maintain the CARE animal census.

People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%):

  • Oversee the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housed in CARE.
  • Lead the Daily CARE rounds meeting.
  • Lead monthly CARE LVT meeting.
  • Develop, disseminate, and keep current the CARE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure their implementation. Facility-specific SOPs are developed in conjunction with ARC, AAH, Adoption Center, BST to ensure best medical, sheltering, and behavioral practices.
  • Model a standard of continued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of CARE including, medical, behavior, housing, safety, and animal flow.
  • Set expectations and goals and provide consistent, high-quality feedback to direct reports, including regular 1:1s and quarterly feedback sessions to build strong relationships, provide clear direction, and encourage opportunities for development. Complete annual performance evaluations.
  • Practice and espouse positive, people-centric management approaches that are in line with team and organizational core values.
  • Recommend internal and external training opportunities as needed for direct reports in identified areas.
  • Respond to concerns from direct reports and selected administrative staff, addressing them promptly and accordingly.
  • Handle employee-relations issues with confidentiality and care, ensuring compliance with any applicable collective-bargaining agreements.
  • Conduct corrective actions related to performance.
  • Maintain proactive communication with the Senior Director as to any critical situations or issues.
  • Support the Senior Director of Veterinary Services in handling any adverse client or patient events appropriately and professionally.
  • Model a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of CARE animal care and handling of dogs and cats.
  • Serve as a champion in times of change management and proactively partner with the ARC and CARE Leadership team in identifying ways to improve people policies and medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with the AAH Office Manager and Direct of Veterinary Services to ensure CARE has appropriate DVM coverage 7 days per week.
  • In collaboration with the AAH management team, ensure the CARE veterinary team is scheduled for all required training, meetings, and lectures.

Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)

  • Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Center departments.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings.
  • Provide medical information and represent CARE to the public and to media when requested.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
  • Create, model, and follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and CARE Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assist with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested.

Recovery & Rehabilitation Center Overview & Upcoming Launch

The R&R Center in Pawling, NY, is a unique program dedicated to providing integrated sheltering, behavioral, and medic al care for canine victims of cruelty. The R&R Center team works closely with ASPCA teams in New York City to help animals rescued in partnership with the NYPD.

The target start date for this position is in October 2025.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Functional Duties (85%)

  • Maintain working knowledge of all Care & Enrichment daily protocols

  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, and keeps accurate records of compliance activities

  • Clean, sanitize, and prepare animal housing areas according to established protocols

  • Perform repeated daily checks of animal holding areas, spot cleaning, feeding, watering, and providing enrichment according to relevant protocols

  • Create and maintain safe and comfortable enriched kennels for all dogs

  • Provide enrichment activities according to the daily enrichment schedule

  • Provide food, water, and medication based on veterinary orders and behavior modification plans

  • Monitor the eating, drinking, and elimination habits of every animal

  • Monitor the population for signs of physical or mental decline, promptly reporting concerns through the appropriate channels

  • Assist in overseeing volunteers as they perform animal related tasks, providing coaching and encouragement; demonstrate respect and gratitude for volunteer support

  • Assist with handling and documentation during dog playgroups

  • Assist with the transport of dogs to and from emergency and specialty veterinarians, and between ASPCA facilities as needed

  • Assist with the physical movement of animals into and out of the shelter using low-stress animal handling techniques and following applicable organizational policies and protocols

  • Collaborate with behavior and veterinary team members, working together to ensure open and ample communication, excellent care, and close monitoring of every animal in the shelter

  • Send timely medic al and behavior observation reports and actively engage within and across teams to implement interventions

  • Attend all required huddles throughout the day, reporting on progress, asking for or providing assistance as needed

  • Attend and participate in training classes as scheduled by the Manager, Care and Enrichment

  • Continually support teammates, working together to stay on track in order to best serve the animals

  • Keep animal care and enrichment equipment and supplies organized, efficiently located, and in good repair, reporting missing, broken, or inadequate tools to management

  • Monitor the inventory and conditions of animal care and enrichment supplies, requesting additional supplies before stock is depleted

  • Be willing to deploy locally or nationally as part of an ASPCA response when the opportunity arises and approved by the Manager, Care and Enrichment.

Operational and Administrative Duties (15%)

  • Maintain meticulous records for every animal in appropriate databases

  • Attend and meaningfully contribute to all relevant R&R Center and ASPCA meetings

  • Accurately track and report time worked, time off, and work-related expenses

  • Responsibly steward R&R Center assets

Education and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Professional, academic or volunteer animal care experience with dogs is required

  • 6 months of professional or volunteer animal care experience with dogs is strongly preferred

  • Animal shelter experience with dogs strongly preferred; dog boarding or veterinary clinic experience with dogs preferred

  • Previous experience working in an animal shelter preferred

  • Fear Free Shelter Program certification (approximately 5 hours) required or completed within 60 days of hire

Qualifications

  • Valid drivers license and ability to pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating safe driving

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the time

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Position Summary:

Responsible for the general care of shelter animals. This includes feeding, watering, cleaning, moving, providing enrichment/socialization, and observing/reporting animals’ physical and mental well-being in accordance with the Association of Shelter Veterinarian Standards of Care guidelines are provided for all animals in shelter care in a timely manner; including appropriate feeding, cleanliness and sanitation, behavioral well-being, and stress reduction.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works efficiently to assist in enhancing and maintaining a culture of health and overall wellness for the animals in our care across the organization.

  • Documents any observed abnormalities (either medical or behavioral) into the Organization’s animal database.

  • Prepares, provides, and ensures proper food and water is available to all assigned animals at all appropriate times.

  • Follows organizational protocols and procedures to ensure assigned kennels and animal housing areas are properly cleaned and disinfected.

  • Ensures that all kennels are equipped and set up appropriately to maximize comfort and minimize the stress of all animals in the shelter environment.

  • Reviews all kennel and facility signage to ensure proper protocol is always followed and reports to management if updates to signage are needed.

  • Cleans, disinfects, and stores all supplies and equipment properly and in a timely manner.

  • Preserves a clean, organized, and orderly appearance of assigned and common areas/vehicles at all times while maintaining them well stocked with needed supplies and equipment.

  • Sorts, moves, and stocks food, supplies, materials, and donations, as needed.

  • Moves animals through and within the shelter as needed and assists with transporting and/or general care needs of animals offsite, including at events, when necessary.

  • Assists to achieve a high volume of animal participation in enrichment activities.

  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate animal inventory.

  • Actively creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for volunteers, including participating in the volunteer training process and working collaboratively with volunteers to ensure they receive the support/resources needed to feel prepared and empowered in their roles and to maximize volunteer effectiveness.

  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Organization’s service to its guests by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.

  • Provides responsive, meaningful and compassionate service to all guests.

  • Other duties as assigned.






Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Equivalent to a High School diploma


License & Certification Requirements:

Some positions may require the incumbent to be at least 21 years of age, and possess and maintain a valid Class C Nevada Driver License. For these positions, incumbents under age 25 must possess and maintain a clean driving record, and be licensed for at least three years prior. Those over age 25 must possess and maintain a safe driving record that will allow for acceptable insurance risk to the Organization.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • General knowledge of companion animal care, welfare, behavior, breeds, and species.

  • Principles and practices of guest service.

  • Effective soft skills or interpersonal skills for dealing with Team Members, volunteers, and the public, in person, in writing, and over the telephone.

  • Correct conversational English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • General computer skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

Physical ability, stamina, and mobility to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crawl, in some cases for an extended period of time. Strength to lift and/or move materials, weighing up to 25 pounds frequently, and 50 pounds occasionally. Vision to read printed materials. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.


Job incumbent is continuously exposed to animals, animal waste, pet dander, peanut butter, potentially harmful cleaning chemicals, high noise, and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites and regular work outdoors for extended periods of time while exposed to cold, rain, and extremely hot temperatures.
