Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) has an exciting opportunity for an Experienced Mechanical System Design & Analysis Engineer to support the MQ-25 Platform Systems team in Berkeley, MO.
MQ-25 is the next generation autonomous tanker being developed by Boeing for the US Navy. It will be the first autonomous platform in the Navy carrier environment & the selected candidate will have an opportunity to be part of the team delivering that capability to the warfighter. In this role, you will be part of the team developing mechanical systems for the MQ-25 air vehicle.
Position Responsibilities:
Support development of the MQ-25 aircraft flight controls system
Support development and modification of electrical & hydraulic flight control actuators and related installations. Support the design, development and modification of mechanisms on the aircraft.
Assist in preparing technical documents for flight control components and systems
Work with sub-tier suppliers to define, develop, and test flight control system components
Support testing of the MQ-25 flight control system in both the lab and aircraft environments
Work under general supervision
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
5+ years of working experience with a Bachelor’s OR 3+ years working experience with a Masters degree, or a PhD.

What You'll Do:
Develop LiDAR system and subsystem requirement and specs
Develop system design concept and provide system/subsystem error budget and tradeoff analysis
Design algorithms on HW and SW level, with working knowledge of common machine learning algorithms.
Systematic data collection with well-defined testing plans and data processing and analysis to drive critical insight and accurate conclusion
In-depth understanding of optical imaging system and good hand-on skillset on the optical system alignment, characterization and validation
Some knowledge about circuitry theory with good hands-on troubleshooting experience on high-speed mixed signal electronics is a big plus
Some knowledge about mechanical systems with stack-up error analysis and servo system understanding is a big plus
Support LiDAR use case understanding and escalation, and work with key customers and internal NPI/manufacturing team to help maturity on volume production
Who You are:

- Metal and plastic sheet metal and part design.
- Develop designs in 3D CAD (Solidworks/ PDM/ACAD) The candidate must have verifiable experience with Solidworks and pass a site evaluation.
- Take project direction from managers to create renderings, fabrication drawings, approval drawings and concepts.
- Excellent communication skills with sales, leadership and team to ensure that designed products meet customer requirements and performance goals.
- Able to work in a team environment and be in the game for total team success!
- Must have excellent organizational skills.
- Must be able to prioritize design steps to achieve the completed design work ahead of schedule.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Knowledge of sound engineering practices and industry standards with a commitment to adhering to applicable standards and best practices.
- Knowledge of basic robotic operations, including mechanical, electrical, and software interfacing.
- Understanding of, and experience with, conveying and material handling equipment is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, and other common software packages. An ability to learn and use other software packages, such as our ERP software, is required.

Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.

Holtec International is seeking applicants for the role of System Design Engineer. The Engineer is responsible for design of plant systems and processes, including specification of major components and systems analysis. This role requires frequent interfacing with other engineering disciplines and licensing groups as well as capable management of system integration activities. The system design specifications will support engineering and licensing requirements, leading to the licensing and construction of the first SMR-300 plant. The Engineer must be eager to learn new skills to create feasible/practical solutions to challenging design problems. The Engineer will be part of a team executing a U.S. Government cost-shared development program requiring efficient completion of engineering assignments.
Specific Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop engineering and licensing requirements for nuclear systems, structures, and components.
- Develop process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), system descriptions, specifications, thermal and pressure loss calculations, and control logic.
- Develop design specifications for individual system components such as heat exchangers, pumps, valves, etc.
- Develop equipment specifications and interact with vendors to obtain vendor input/design confirmation of various components.
- Review component drawings and system P&IDs to ensure compliance to the drawing standards and system/component requirements
- Applicant should be prepared to play an active role in a project driven and highly integrated engineering team
Minimum Requirements:
- BS in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
- Strong academic background in fluid mechanics and/or thermal engineering.
- 5-10 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

- Excellent attention to detail and capable of producing error-free documents.

As a System Design Engineer, you will be:
Report to the Cover Gas System Manager and is focused on system design, analysis, systems engineering, and supplier oversight. In this role, you will act as a system design engineer for client advanced nuclear reactor projects. The successful candidate will integrate and coordinate with engineers working on interfacing systems. The System Design Engineer will work as part of a high-performing team of engineers and scientists.
Responsibilities
- Design of fluid systems from development of requirements through final design and commissioning.
- Perform technical trade studies and decisions to refine system design.
- Oversee suppliers during development fabrication, and testing of gas processing, filtration, and monitoring equipment
- Review component designs in the context of the greater system design to determine how detailed design of components impacts the greater system.
- Prepare system level engineering documentation including technical specifications and operations narratives.
- Review system documentation to anticipate and resolve system and plant level integration issues before they are realized.
- Support design reviews as system designs are established and refined.
- Develop and review technical design documents, such as System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, Engineering Design Specifications, etc.
- Generate design packages for system designs including coordinating of calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
- Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings.
- Interface with various design disciplines (such as mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear) to identify and develop system design and performance criteria.

Key Qualifications and Skills
- B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university and 5+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills.
- Experience with piping systems and the ability to read and draw P&IDs.
- Experience working with suppliers in development and fabrication of safety-related equipment
- Strong understanding of design codes (ASME, BPVC, API).
- Familiar with safety classifications of systems, structures, and components.
- Familiar with piping design and analysis.
- Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1, AS 9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent.
- Must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate with minimal direction.
- Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
- The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, able to communicate openly, and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
- Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
- Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
- Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
Pay Rate: $75 to $80 per hour.
