Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist Position Summary: Remote Crisis Intervention Specialists answer incoming crisis contacts to all Lines for Life crisis and referral helplines with care and compassion, and within the scope of each helpline program.

Remote Crisis Intervention Specialists receive extensive clinical skills training in alignment with current best practices in suicide prevention and intervention.

Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate the culture of Lines for Life by modeling behavior that supports the organization’s goals and philosophies.
  • Answer crisis helplines with compassion in accordance with the organization’s training expectations and scope. Remote Crisis Intervention Specialists receive crisis contacts on over 30 different crisis lines including but not limited to: the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, veterans and military crisis lines, its YouthLine, its Senior Loneliness Line, an alcohol and drug helpline, hospital mental health crisis lines and behavioral health scheduling calls, as well as county mental health crisis lines.
  • Document crisis contacts in an accurate and timely manner with relevant clinical information in an electronic health record system.
  • Place follow-up calls to crisis contacts as scheduled by the shift supervisor.
  • Assist with placing rescue calls as needed when other crisis lines staff or volunteers are on acute crisis contacts requiring emergency assistance.
  • Triage crisis contacts and collaborate with coworkers to manage crisis contact flow and ensure that the lines remain available for contacts in escalated crisis.
  • Complete mandatory trainings and workshops to continue learning the latest policies and protocols and stay up to date on crisis intervention tools & techniques.

Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist Training

  • Lines for Life requires extensive Crisis Lines Onboarding training, which can be completed remotely. New hires must attend 5 weeks of paid crisis lines onboarding training. The next training begins September 29th and consists of 3 weeks between 8:30am - 5:00pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday, plus 2 weeks of additional precepting training. The schedule for precepting can vary as we are a 24/7, 365 day a year operation, so flexibility in your availability is needed to complete the precepting portion of the training. We want to make sure that all candidates understand that while you do get a scheduled lunch break, even missing half hour portions of these trainings can result in training expectations not being met. Due to the trainings being group trainings, there is generally no flexibility for each candidate to be able to take their breaks at different times. Training requires participation, full engagement without distractions, and being on camera over Zoom. Equipment is provided. You must have private high speed internet and a confidential place to take crisis contacts to meet security and technical requirements.

Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist Work Schedule:

  • Our crisis lines are operated 24/7. This position requires working some holidays and working weekends.
  • The work schedule will be determined at the time of offer and is based upon Lines for Life’s crisis contact volume trends. All full time employees are required to work at least 1 weekend shift per week. We are currently hiring for these shifts which are all in Pacific time. (Please note due to overtime laws, we can only offer Alaska, California, and Nevada candidates shifts that are 8 hours or less)

  • We want to let you know that all crisis contacts are recorded – inbound and outbound. We review them regularly to ensure safety and quality assurance and for training and supervisory purposes. What this means is that you will have crisis contacts randomly picked for review and you will receive clinical feedback on how you are doing. This happens every few weeks and is one way that we ensure professional growth of our team. Another aspect of this technology is that while you are taking crisis contacts, supervisors can listen in to provide support if a crisis contact is particularly challenging or high risk. This supports our Crisis Intervention Specialists so they are not alone and ensures safety for our crisis contacts.


Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist Compensation Package:

The starting wage for the Remote Crisis Intervention Specialist position is $25.60/hr. for ind viduals with graduate degrees in a related field and 23.42/hr. for individuals with bachelor's degrees. There is a 1.75/hr. overnight shift differential when working between the hours of 10 pm – 5 am Pacific Time and time and a half holiday pay when required to work holidays. POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide routine and emergency mental health assessments, diagnostic assessments, stabilization, crisis intervention, and treatment planning of clients in the community, at the CRU Residential Unit, and on the Hotline. As an appropriately degreed/licensed member of the ESS staff, this clinician serves with others as a Health Officer for the county subject to approval by the Executive Director of the Lorain County Board of Mental Health. All job functions are performed under the supervision of the ESS team leaders and shift supervisors.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to routine and emergency requests for service. Triage telephone calls and walk-ins. Gather information for telephone intake screening and emergency assessment and provide information and referral to persons requesting information. Provide telephone support and crisis intervention to clients who call the hotline.
  • Perform crisis intervention for clients and their significant others. Provide face-to-face counseling to clients and significant others to promote stabilization of a crisis situation. Provide rape crisis intervention when Rape Crisis volunteers are not available.
  • Perform mental health assessments. Perform pre-hospital screenings, diagnostic assessments and intake screenings in response to requests for outpatient services. Determine the needed interventions to ensure safety of clients and others based on the mental status assessments. Assess clients when placed on the unit for 23-hour monitoring.
  • Manage the care of clients on the residential stabilization unit. Provide one-on-one crisis intervention to clients, monitor self-medication of clients, monitor behavior and mental status of clients on the unit, develop treatment plans within 24 hours for clients, and document client progress in chart. Manage the medication room and monitor client self-medication. Coordinate the stabilization unit treatment plan with Center service providers. Lead the groups on the CRU unit and Partial Hospitalization groups, and assist clients in obtaining personal care items.
  • Transport clients to community sites as needed.
  • Carry out duties as a health officer in Lorain County. Assess the mental status of persons to determine the safety of clients and others according to the emergency medical certificate guidelines. Make outreach as needed to assess and intervene with clients reported to be in crisis.
  • Work with families, significant others, other community agencies and law enforcement officials as needed to assess and intervene with clients reported to be in crisis.
  • Oversee and guide the treatment interventions of mental health technicians. Provide clinical consultation to technicians.
  • Provide group counseling to the Residential Unit clients and clients from the community.
  • Provide critical incident debriefing, support and education to the community.
  • Attend meetings at the Center as required and assigned.
  • Train students and new staff working in ESS.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork on time and follow Center procedures and clinical standards in performing all job duties. Complete and tabulate report items (e.g. contact sheets, shift reports, crisis alert, pre-hospital screenings).
  • Consult with MD’s and other providers as needed regarding client assessments and crisis interventions.
  • Ensure competence and annual certification in the following areas: CPR, First Aid, Physical Crisis Intervention, and Rape Crisis training.
  • React to change and stress productively and to handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

  • This includes being able to walk, climb stairs, navigate changing surface conditions including wet, slippery, and icy grounds, and function in the proximity of electrical appliances, open flames and in areas with poor air quality including potentially smoke-filled rooms.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) provides assistance to the trained Phone Workers and Call Screeners on the Regional Crisis Line. The CIS assists Phone workers in assessing, developing, and implementing, and resolving emergent and non-emergent calls. Crisis Intervention Specialists will work collaboratively with Screeners to assess the most appropriate resource for callers to be directed to when needed. The CIS provides feedback on adherence to our clinical model and debriefing and emotional support for volunteers following calls that are emotional or difficult.


The CIS takes phone calls from crisis and professional lines as instructed by the Crisis Services Clinician. The CIS completes Case Reviews and accurately and timely reviews log-sheets and screening guides. The CIS participates in program meetings and attends training and in-services.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Phone Room Support

1. Follows guidance of Crisis Services Clinician regarding priorities in phone room, taking calls, supporting phone workers, and adding needed support as outlined by CSC and supervisors.

2. Facilitates Support for Trained Phone Workers (PWs):

a. Guides Phone Workers and Screeners in assessing both emergent and non-emergent calls.

b. Supports Phone Workers in devising and executing appropriate interventions for both emergent and non-emergent calls based on our clinical model.

c. Aids Phone Workers in resolving issues arising from emergent and non-emergent calls.

3. Ensures adequate monitoring of both emergent and non-emergent calls.

4. Offers Effective Feedback and Debriefing Sessions Following Calls to Phone Workers as needed.

5. Conducts Training on Call Handling Skills, Policies, and Procedures.

6. Contributes to the Evaluation of Phone Workers by Providing Input to the Crisis Services Clinician as requested.

7. Assists Phone Workers in Following Phone Worker Requirements.


B. Service Delivery

  1. Monitors call queue and responds promptly to meet service and contractual metrics.
  2. Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of Mental Health Systems across various counties, including their respective procedures.

C. Patient Placement Coordination

  1. Verify bed availability in the WA Trac database and the County's registry of patients awaiting placement in appropriate psychiatric treatment beds.
  2. Establish and maintain communication channels with designated hospitals that have suitable beds for patient placement.
  3. Utilize established criteria outlined in the Patient Placement Guidelines decision tree to match patients with available psychiatric beds.
  4. Inform hospitals with available beds of potential patients, facilitating the assessment process.
  5. Notify hospitals where patients are awaiting placement once a hospital with bed availability has been informed.
  6. Record placement outcomes, including completed placements or reasons for unaccepted referrals, in the County database.
  7. Exhibit exceptional professional service skills when interacting with all involved parties.

D. Professional Development

  1. Actively participates in the Performance Excellence Program (PEP) to establish and pursue professional growth goals in the capacity of a CIS.
  2. Regularly attend training offered by Crisis Connections to enhance professional development and expertise in the field of Mental Health.

Solari is an award-winning nonprofit that operates a 24/7 crisis line serving statewide in Arizona, Oklahoma and Colorado. Our mission is to Inspire Hope through our talented and compassionate staff.


Since 2007, Solari has been providing crisis contact center services and in that short time has helped thousands of individuals and families connect to the help they need. Additionally, in that short timeframe, Solari has grown to expand services to a peer-run Warm Line, Serious Mental Illness (SMI) determinations, mobile team dispatches, crisis transportation services, emergency room-based assessments, Department of Child Safety (DCS) rapid response and crisis stabilization services, telephone follow-up to those who need it, tragedy support lines and other in-kind services to the community.

  • Minimum of a GED/High School diploma and four (4) years of full-time behavioral health work experience.

  • Alternatively, a combination of education and experience will be considered (Master’s degree / Bachelor's degree + 1 year BH experience / Associate degree + 2 years BH experience).                Specifications: Behavioral health or substance use fields

  • Experience as a behavioral health professional, crisis intervention, and contact center experience preferred.

Working Conditions:


While performing the job duties in the office or at a home office, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands; they must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Exposure to noise typical with office operations.  Ability to hear and speak. Employees must maintain a stable and secure private home internet with a minimum of 50Mbps download and 5Mbps upload, and an average jitter less than 20% of latency.
