Job ResponsibilitiesThis role is responsible for developing and executing the media relations strategy for the Association. The candidate will work closely with the communications team and other departments to promote the Association’s mission, vision, and values, positioning BCBSA as a healthcare leader. Key duties include managing media relations, public affairs campaigns, and stakeholder interactions, as well as translating complex healthcare issues into clear messages.
Essential Functions- Develop earned media relations strategy to shape the Beltway narrative and position BCBSA leaders as experts.
- Lead, manage, and coach the media relations team to ensure strategy execution and high-quality output.
- Collaborate with senior leadership on issues management and crisis communications.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and news organizations.
- Partner with departments to address policy and regulatory issues, including coalition work.
- Oversee creation of media materials such as talking points, press releases, op-eds, and social media content.
- Manage outside agencies to enhance media positioning of BCBSA executives.
- Perform other duties as assigned and ensure policy compliance.
Educational: Preferred - Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
Experience: Required - 10+ years in communications
Skills and Abilities- Advanced counsel and relationship-building skills with senior leadership and media contacts.
- Proficiency in translating complex health care and policy issues into compelling messages.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and lead teams effectively.
- Deep knowledge of healthcare industry issues and policy environment at federal and state levels.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with attention to detail and adherence to AP Style.
- Experience with data-driven communication strategies and crisis management.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed organization and manage outside agencies.
Primarily sedentary work in an office or remote setting, with up to 10% travel as needed.
